Sevices

Pediatric occupational therapists provide specialized services to help children meet developmental milestones, develop the skills they need to perform daily activities, improve their independence, and enhance their overall quality of life, overcome sensory challenges and improve self-regulation skills.

Occupational therapy can help your child in the following areas:

  • Fine Motor Skills Development: OTs work on improving a child’s ability to perform tasks that require precise hand and finger movement, hand-eye coordination, grip strength, and dexterity, such as writing, buttoning clothes, using utensils, and manipulating small objects.

  • Sensory Processing Support: OTs help children who have difficulties processing sensory information (like sound, touch, or movement) by providing sensory integration therapy to help them respond to sensory input in a more adaptive way.

  • Self-Care Skills Training: Therapists work with children to improve their ability to perform daily self-care tasks such as dressing, grooming, feeding, and toileting.

  • Cognitive and Perceptual Skills Development: OTs assist children in improving their cognitive functions, such as memory, attention, and problem-solving, as well as visual-perceptual skills, which are crucial for tasks like reading and writing.

  • Social and Play Skills Development: Through play-based activities, OTs help children learn how to interact with others, share, take turns, and develop appropriate social behaviors.

  • Adaptive Equipment Training: For children with physical disabilities, OTs may provide training on how to use adaptive equipment (e.g., special utensils, communication devices, wheelchairs) to increase independence.

  • Environmental Modifications: Therapists assess a child’s environment (home, school, or community) and recommend modifications to make it more accessible and supportive of the child’s needs.

  • Parent and Caregiver Education: OTs educate and train parents and caregivers on strategies to support their child’s development at home and in other environments and how to implement therapeutic activities at home.

  • Academic Support: Therapists may use strategies to help children manage behavioral challenges, such as difficulties with transitions, attention, and following directions. For children struggling with attention, organization, or problem-solving, OTs provide strategies to improve these skills, which are critical for academic success.
